The 4th SWRFM Test Broadcast from Doonside High School in 1993 remains a landmark in community radio. Only four days long and yet it included a live broadcast from the Blacktown Show (in a van borrowed from 2RRR) and a massive dance party, with transmitter on the roof of Blacktown Council chambers. There were studios, crossbar links, telephone lines and STL transmitter links running everywhere!
Test No. 4 will forever stand as that ultimate “because we can!” moment. Driven almost entirely by the technical team who were only ever in competition with themselves, this test almost burnt out the whole organisation. It did however help in making the local council begin to take notice.
Surprisingly, quite a bit of it remains today. Join us now on the Friday afternoon as the guys battle desperately to string it all together..
